Wilderness GuidePlanning a December 2026 Holiday in Wilderness: Dates, Beaches and What's On

School holiday dates, lifeguards and beach rules, what's open in the national park and the December events within reach of Wilderness.
The December 2026 school holidays run from Thursday 10 December, after public schools close on 9 December, until learners return on Wednesday 13 January 2027, and Wilderness is at its busiest between Christmas and New Year. If you want a particular holiday home, flight or event, book now: last festive season George's accommodation peaked at 87% occupancy on 27 and 31 December.
This guide covers the key dates, beach safety, what's open in the national park, and the events within reach of Wilderness this December.
When are the December 2026 school holidays?
- Schools close: Wednesday 9 December 2026, the last day of term 4 for public schools.
- Schools reopen: Wednesday 13 January 2027 for learners in the Western Cape, according to the Western Cape Education Department's 2027 planning calendar. Teachers return on 11 January.
- Busiest days: Last year, festive-season occupancy in George averaged 70% over the school holidays and peaked at 87% on 27 and 31 December, before easing as schools reopened.
If your dates are flexible, look at the start of the holidays in mid-December or the second week of January rather than the Christmas to New Year stretch.
Is Wilderness beach safe for swimming in December?
Wilderness Main Beach holds Blue Flag status, which means it is managed to strict standards for water quality, safety and facilities. Last summer George Municipality ran its lifeguard season like this, and the 2026/27 schedule is expected to be confirmed closer to the time:
- 1 to 13 December: lifeguards on duty daily from 09:00 to 17:00 at Wilderness Main Beach, Victoria Bay, Herold's Bay and Leentjiesklip.
- 14 December to the end of February: lifeguards on duty daily from 07:00 to 19:00.
- December and January only: extra lifeguards at the Wilderness Lagoon, Gwaing River Mouth and Steps Beach.
Always swim between the flags and follow lifeguards' instructions. Dogs are not permitted on Blue Flag beaches, so plan beach time for four-legged guests elsewhere.

What's open in the Wilderness section of the national park?
The Half-collared Kingfisher Trail reopened in July 2026 after storm repairs. Starting near Ebb and Flow Rest Camp, it crosses the Touw River on a hand-pulled pontoon and follows the river to a waterfall. Allow around 3 to 3.5 hours for the 7 to 8 km return walk, and start early on hot December days. BirdLife South Africa notes the Knysna Warbler's call is easiest to hear in summer, and Knysna Turaco and Narina Trogon are regulars along the route.
The Waterside Boardwalk along the Touw River is still closed for repairs. As of 9 October 2026, SANParks had issued a purchase order but work had not restarted and no completion date had been confirmed, so check before you plan around it.

How do I plan a December holiday in Wilderness?
- Book flights and car hire early. George Airport handled more than 911,000 passengers in 2025, its busiest year on record, and just under 96,000 in December alone. The George Herald reported in July 2026 that the airport has reached capacity, with a R310 million expansion planned.
- Be water wise. The Garden Route Dam was full in October 2026, but George's Level 2B water restrictions still apply. That means no hosing down cars or decks, and no filling pools with municipal water. Short showers help everyone.
- Plan quiet days around busy ones. Mornings on the trail or the lagoon, and beach time in the late afternoon when lifeguards are on duty until 19:00, help you avoid the midday rush.
- Reserve restaurants for Christmas and New Year. With homes at their fullest on these dates, book your table for 25 and 31 December well ahead.
